Co-op FAQ

Needs Updating

How long is a session?

Each session lasts 6 weeks, with a 1 week break between sessions.  Please see the calendar for exact dates.

NEW! for the 2014-2015 year:  There will be 5 weeks of classes and the 6th week will be a field trip.

What type of classes do you offer?

Typically, Roots and Wings offers enrichment-style classes that involve fun, hand-on learning.  Teachers tend to choose classes that homeschool parents can’t (or don’t want to do at home).  Past classes include art, PE, games, and drama.

Who can participate in co-op classes?

Roots and Wings accommodates homeschool families with children of all ages.

What do you mean by secular co-op?

Roots and Wings welcomes families of all beliefs.  In order to respect all members’ religious beliefs, we do not teach from or promote a specific religious point of view.

Can I drop my child off for co-op classes?

Roots and Wings is not a drop-off co-op.  Our classes are taught by parent volunteers, and everyone’s help is needed during co-op hours.

Do I need to volunteer during co-op?

A parent from each participating family is expected to remain at co-op during class time and serve in some capacity.  In addition to volunteering during class time, there are many parent jobs that need to be filled each year.

Will I be required to teach a class?

We are very thankful for our parents who volunteer to teach classes.  It allows us to offer unique classes while keeping the costs low. While parents are encouraged to teach, it is not required to participate in classes.  Please see our FAQs about teaching at our co-op.

How much does it cost to participate in co-op classes?

The prices for classes vary based on the cost of supplies needed for each class.  Since our teachers are parent volunteers, the cost is kept fairly low.  Class prices are listed with each class on the current Class Descriptions.  There is also a $23 per semester facility fee per family.

Are there any other fees besides the class fees?

Besides the cost of supplies, there is a facility fee of $23 per semester per family.

I only want to register for one session.  Is that possible?

Due to the number of families interested in co-op classes, it is discouraged to register for only one session.  Registering for only one sessions leaves a empty spots in classes that could have been filled by other children.

Registrations accepted at the beginning on the semester are for the semester only.  It is not possible to register for a single session at the beginning of the semester.  If you decide after the semester has started that you would like to join in the next session classes, you may register as long as there is room in the classes.

My child is working above grade level for his age.  Can I put him in co-op classes above his grade level?

Because Roots and Wings’ classes are typically not academic in nature, we recommend enrolling your child in classes according to their age.  As a parent, you know your child best.  If your child is able to interact appropriately in a higher-level class, he/she is welcome to try it out.  However, a space will not be held in the correct age group if a higher-level class is not a good fit.

My child is 6, but likes the classes being offered to the 8-10 year olds better.  Can she take classes for a different age group?

Do we need to take classes all four hours?

Classes are scheduled into two blocks: AM and PM classes.  When you register for a class, you are registering for both hours of that block.

What do I do if I have to miss a week of co-op?

Since every parent has a role in co-op, it is important that you let us know if you need to miss co-op.  Please let us know via Facebook if you will be absent.

If you know in advance that you will be missing a week, please be sure to let the teacher know not to plan for your student that week.

What about lunch?

There is time scheduled for lunch between morning and afternoon classes.  Lunch is not provided by Roots and Wings.  If you so choose, your family may bring a sack lunch.  Refrigeration and microwave are available.

How do I know if classes are cancelled due to inclement weather?

We follow IPS when deciding whether to cancel classes.  Please view our bad weather policy.

Do you make up snow days?

No, we do not make up snow days.

How do I register?

Registration will be announced on the forum.  The registration form is on theCurrent Registration page of our website.  Please join our Facebook page to obtain the password for this page.  Fill out the registration form and mail it back with your payment.

Do I get a refund if our family decides not to attend classes?

As per the consent on the registration form, once a child is registered for classes, fees will not be reimbursed.  All surplus monies will be added to the general co-op fund.
